Overview
The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) allows many temporary foreign workers and foreign students who graduated in Canada to apply to stay permanently in the country. Applicants must demonstrate that they possess the right mix of knowledge, skills and experience to succeed in Canada.
Advantages to Employers
The program has streamlined application requirements and a high acceptance rate. Currently, a case is processed in about 15 months. CEC applicants can keep working here in Canada while their application for permanent residence is processed, which means that employers can keep benefiting from this supply of skilled talent.
Temporary foreign workers and recent international graduates can make the transition to permanent status on their own merit, without the need for any supporting documents from their employers.
How It Works
Temporary foreign workers who have worked for two years in Canada in a managerial, professional or technical capacity, including those in the skilled trades, are eligible to apply for permanent residence through the CEC.
Foreign students who have graduated with a qualifying Canadian degree, diploma or skilled trade credential are also eligible. In addition to their Canadian education credential, they must also have one year of Canadian work experience in a managerial, professional or technical capacity, including those in the skilled trades. They may gain this work experience by applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit after they have completed their studies.
In all cases, applicants must meet the required language threshold for their occupation.
Facts and Figures
Since launching in late 2008, the Canadian Experience Class has grown in the number of permanent residents accepted each year. Minister Kenney welcomed the 10,000th person to have achieved permanent residence through the CEC in November 2011.
