In 1663, with the authorization of the King of France, Louis XIV, Monseigneur François de Laval, the first bishop of New France, founded in Québec City the colony’s first educational institution, the Séminaire de Québec. Nearly 200 years later, in 1852, a Royal Charter creating Université Laval was granted to the Séminaire de Québec by Queen Victoria. Université Laval hence became the wellspring of French-language higher education in North America, offering academic programs in four faculties – Arts, Law, Medicine, and Theology.

The history of Université Laval is closely tied to that of the Province of Québec. Long the training ground for the province’s French-speaking intellectual elite, the university remains highly influential and is still considered today a standard bearer for the preservation of the French influence in North America.
